Internships
The Washington City Paper hosts an internship program three times a year in the Spring, Summer and Fall congruent to the yearly academic schedule. For Washington, our internship program is a rare findlow on grunt work and high on potential. We place our interns in a variety of departments, including Editorial, Marketing, Web and Advertising. Interns are treated as members of our staff and have specific duties that contribute significantly to the pace and production of our newspaper:
Editorial Intern: Editorial Interns work in the Editorial Department, entering, updating and researching the arts and events listings, writing blog posts, copy-editing and proofing articles and working on various editorial projects. If you’re quick to adopt the City Paper’s style and standards, you might see yourself working on a long-term project that could wind up in the paper as the big news or cover story. Since Washington is a competitive news environment, we encourage candidates with clips and journalism experience.
Marketing Intern: The Marketing Intern works with the Marketing Director to pursue partnerships with local businesses and individuals with the goal of heightening City Paper awareness, assist in developing marketing materials to promote external City Paper events, build and maintain media lists and newsletter subscription lists, draft press materials for events including press releases, newsletter and Web site content and maintains and coordinates the City Paper’s special event video blog.
Web Intern: The Web Intern works in the Web Department and contributes to the ongoing development and maintenance of the City Paper site and online media projects that focus on the intersection between editorial and Web, such as developing a database of locations around the city museums, bars, statues, etc. that could be used to give geographic context to online applications, working with the City Paper archive to identify and enhance the best and most relevant articles, and working with other large datasets, such as events or restaurant raters. Candidates with coding experience and skill or good online experience are encouraged to apply.
The City Paper internship program also features “City Paper Seminar,” an educational component where City Paper staff and interns come together for weekly roundtable discussions. Together, we’ll address different media-related topics, followed by a Q&A and open conversation. The series brings interns together, regardless of their assigned department, to cultivate their relationship with the City Paper staff and to start thinking and speaking critically about all facets of print and online media.
We’re looking for smart, creative college students who are hardworking and smart with a lot of energy. We put a high premium on attention to detail and fresh ideas. Positions are unpaid, but we’ll take good care of you. Our interns must be able to receive academic credit from their university or college (which means you’re killing two birds with one stone) and we offer tons of other benefits (including tickets to the best events in D.C., coffee, lots of swag, no dress code… you will never wait for another movie pass or guest list hook-up).
To apply, send your resume, 500-word autobiography and samples of your work to:
